Plumbing Projects: When To Call A Professional

Today’s homeowners are probably more prone than ever to attempt many of the projects around their homes themselves. But what happens when that simple project suddenly becomes complicated? Even experienced do-it-yourselfers may soon discover that some projects can become too difficult to handle and that it may be best to call in a professional. Projects dealing with a home’s plumbing system are a good example.

It’s a good idea to leave the following projects to qualified plumbers:

  • Water heater replacement. Regardless of whether it’s a gas or electric water heater, proper installation of the unit’s relief valve is extremely important. This valve is a safety device and must be correctly sized and terminate in an approved location. If the heater is gas-fired, proper venting is also required to remove carbon monoxide and other harmful byproducts of combustion. Improper replacement can pose a health hazard, not to mention a serious explosion hazard as well. Because so many aspects of water heater installation may cause safety or health hazards if not done properly, many localities require that only a licensed plumbing contractor install them.
  • Repairing or replacing damaged pipes. Repairing or replacing a leaking or damaged pipe is another project best left to a pro. That’s because pipes can be made from a number of different materials, including cast iron, copper, galvanized steel, and several kinds of plastic. Incorrect work can cause water damage that can compromise your structure, cost a pretty penny in repairs, and even encourage mold growth that can be harmful to your health.
  • Clearing drain clogs. While many homeowners assume that chemical drain cleaners are an effective way to clear stubborn drain clogs in sinks and showers, the truth is that they only provide a temporary fix and may actually cause plumbing system damage in the long run. To avoid cracks, leaks, and corrosion to your pipes from these caustic chemicals, it is far better to have your drains cleared by a plumber. A plumber can safely remove clogs without chemicals, preserving the integrity of your pipes and ridding you of slow, bubbling, smelly drains for good.
